Montachusett commission approves minutes, endorses landfill transition planning

FITCHBURG — Montachusett Regional Planning Commission addresses landfill closure and fiscal challenges. The commission heard from Irene Congdon, Municipal Assistance Coordinator at the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, on the imminent 2030 closure of Westminster-Fitchburg landfill, the only active landfill remaining in the region after four closed since 2005. Congdon urged MRPC to update its 2005 Regional Solid Waste Plan using available state grants and technical assistance.
In separate business, Executive Director Glenn Eaton announced plans to retire in approximately 18 months and briefed commissioners on FY27 projections showing revenue declining 43 percent to $1,552,649 against stable expenses, creating a projected deficit exceeding $1.15 million. The commission approved unanimous votes on January minutes and the January cash schedule before recruiting for two planning positions.
