Fitchburg Police donation helps fund $5,500 gift to teen with cancer
Cops for Kids with Cancer delivered a $5,500 check to the family of 13-year-old Aubrey Boucher, who is being treated for leukemia, with Fitchburg Police having donated $2,500 to the charity from a softball tournament.
Cops for Kids with Cancer (CFKWC) and the UMass Chan Medical School Police Department in Worcester presented a $5,500 check to the family of 13-year-old Aubrey Boucher, who is being treated for cancer, the Town of Fitchburg announced.
CFKWC board member Sal Mirabella Jr. delivered the donation last week during a visit to the UMass Chan Medical School Police Department and Aubrey's family. Aubrey was diagnosed earlier this year with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and faces both inpatient and outpatient treatment and repeated hospitalizations. She lives with her mother, Rianne Cooper, her father, Wayne Boucher, and an older brother.
CFKWC funds are not designated for a specific purpose, and families may use the money for medical expenses or other costs tied to hospital stays and visits. The organization said each family typically receives $5,500, and since 2002 it has given $6.7 million to 1,261 families with children battling cancer.
Fitchburg Police also donated $2,500 to CFKWC, money raised through a softball tournament the department held. Several Fitchburg officers attended the disbursement to Aubrey's family.
“Aubrey is a fantastic young teenager, whose determination and positivity shows through her infectious smile as she battles week in and week out,” Mirabella said in the release. “This disbursement was a full-circle moment since Fitchburg Police also donated money to our organization. Fitchburg officers were able to see where the money they raised goes, and the Boucher family was able to see how many people care about Aubrey and all the other kids we help that are battling cancer.”
UMass Chan Medical School Police Deputy Chief Nancy O'Loughlin, Sgt. Judy Lam, Officer Shane Brien and Officer Randi Fisher took part in the visit, along with Fitchburg Police Officer Jameson Carroll, Officer Shelbie Hertel, Officer Jose Figueroa and Lt. Dave Gordon. UMass Medical Center social worker Jenna Scott, who submitted the application to CFKWC, also attended.
